"Muladhara-Chakra", 2004, 260cm x 146cm, Acrylic on canvas.

The Muladhara or Root-Chakra is your cosmic plug nourishing the body, spirit and soul with life energy, ensuring survival. A stable Mulhadhara allows the earth's life energy to freely flow and ascend through all Chakras, allowing character to develop.

In Hinduism, this first Chakra is traditionally represented by 4 petals, and a square symbol for the earth. In nature earth, fire and the red glow of sunrise and sunset are representative. Whereas in Tantric Yoga the Kundalini energy is seated here. It is also the Chakra appertaining to Brahma.

Bhang is a product more than 4000 years old, based on an ancient Vedic tradition prepared from the leaf and flower of the male cannabis plant. A compound is made and the paste is rolled into small balls which can be eaten or added to a drink such as lassi. Bhang is sold through Government Bhang Shops at many pilgrimage sites predominantly in Northern India to enhance the effect of meditation. Varanasi, also known as Benares, located by the mighty River Ganges, is a major cultural centre and the destination for millions of Hindu pilgrims. The painting shows 3 Sadhus (Holy Men) smoking a chillum by the Ganges as Shiva looks on.
