"New Beginnings for an Old Soul", 2005, 184 x 165 cm, Acrylic on canvas

"Window to Noh (Behind the invisible mask)", 2005, 147 x 94cm, Acrylic on canvas

There is a long and really interesting history of the 'Noh' Theatre in Japan dating way back to the 13th Century and its roots of 'field music performances' for rural communities.

What I find truly fascinating however, are the masks used in Noh Theatre. Stage props are seldom used, as the most important visual aid of all is the Noh mask. Masks are worn only by the main characters, and show the true essence of the person being played. To remove the social mask in other words and show what lies beneath.

Which mask do you think is you?
